The Call: Why You Are Outgrowing the 9-to-5

4–6 minutes

A well-laid path. A predictable journey. A known outcome. Sounds like everything we should want.

Much of the world we live in is built on a structure of order, rules, and predictability. For some, this structure brings comfort, stability, and peace—providing a secure and clear blueprint for how to live. The 9-to-5 world fits perfectly with their understanding of how things are, and there is a beautiful alignment there for them.

But what if, for you, this alignment no longer exists? What happens when this road no longer feels right, and you are just moving through your days—going through the motions—just to get to a destination that feels too far away?

Maybe what once felt right no longer does. Perhaps this quiet truth has been carried longer than you want to admit. No matter how hard you try, and no matter how much you tell yourself that this is just a phase, your soul simply cannot anchor into the 9-to-5 anymore.

It can be scary to think about leaving the stability of a 9-to-5—the steady paycheque, the predictable corporate ladder, and the comfort of knowing what tomorrow looks like. Logically, you want it to work out. Yet, you find yourself with a knot in your stomach every Monday morning, dragging yourself out of bed, and counting down the days until the weekend. Your mood has shifted; the brightness in your eyes and spirit has faded, and you are starting to feel like a shell of who you are.

You wish you could share this feeling with others, but they would just shrug it off. You are questioning a norm that everyone else has just accepted. The message you receive is always the same: just keep your head down, do your work, and accept the exhaustion, the time spent away from family, and the stress that comes along with it. Ignore the yearning of your soul, and if you do it well, you will be set free for “good behavior” and can retire after 40 years.

For many of these 9-to-5 roles, there is an expectation of compliance. A company’s mission, vision, and values are expected to become your own. While in the beginning this may not seem like a big deal, over time, you may find that you actually don’t align with the corporate culture anymore, finding that it stands in conflict with your own values, purpose, and mission.

Despite your best efforts to go along with the way of things, you cannot quiet the internal conflict. Sometimes you look around in awe at how others are so content with the system, and you wish that you could be like that, too. But their role in the 9-to-5 is the right path for them. It brings them a genuine sense of peace within the very structure it provides.

But this structure is no longer for you. The growing discontent has disrupted that peace, and a new voice has made itself known. It is not the voice of your family, friends, the media, or society as a whole—the external noise you are so used to hearing and being influenced by. It’s a different kind of voice, one only you can hear. And it wants to consciously partner with you on your journey.

Up until now, this voice stayed in the background, waiting patiently for you to be ready to step onto a new path. This is the path you came to walk, a journey that has always been part of you. It is calling you toward more passion, more joy, and a greater meaning that cannot be fulfilled within the walls of a 9-to-5. This is not just about a change in job, but a shift in the way you want to express yourself through your work.

But what stops so many from taking the leap—and why you may feel stuck at the moment—is that the road is uncharted. In the traditional structure, parameters are clear, and corporate ladders are built. But in stepping away and venturing onto a new path, the journey is undefined. And this is where faith and inner knowing are tested and strengthened. You come to discover that each step on the roadmap is created in the moment, and it reveals more of itself as you start moving in its direction.

If the desire for a new path is within you, the way forward is already embedded inside it. It is like a living roadmap, one that responds to each action you take. It does not want you to be bogged down by the “how” and all the steps involved—that only slows things down. Instead, it wants you to focus on aligning with your calling and taking inspired action as it presents itself. Take that one step, and allow the next one to appear.

You don’t have to abandon the 9-to-5 and leap into the unknown all at once. It is okay to take two steps forward and one step back into the comfort of what you know. While this journey tests your resolve, your soul will always guide you toward what is greater. The universe will bring the support, resources, and people you need to answer that call.

This is the shift from following a traditional path to one guided by your soul—a path truly aligned with how you want to express yourself in the world. If you view yourself as a piece of the puzzle in bringing something greater to the world, you can see that every piece has its timing. If you are reading this and it resonates, then your timing is now.

Know that if you are feeling discontent with your 9-to-5, you are not alone. You are feeling what so many are experiencing right now: the pull to step away from what no longer feeds the soul. By simply giving yourself permission to honor that pull and look toward what is possible, you are answering the call for more meaning, more purpose, and more resonance in your life.
